Most Coaches Who Promise Financial Outcomes Aren’t Running Coaching Businesses

Most coaches who promise specific financial outcomes in specific timeframes aren't running coaching businesses.

They're running hope operations.

Over the past few years, I've had the same conversation more times than I can count.

Someone reaches out about working together. Before we even get to what they need help with, they mention debt.

Sometimes $10k, sometimes $25k or more.

It’s always from a coaching program that promised specific financial results.

And then they say some version of: “I need to pay that off before I can work with anyone else.”

I get it. I've been there myself.

But I've started paying more attention to how people end up in that position.

And why it keeps happening.

The Pattern Behind the Promises

I've seen this pattern play out dozens of times: Someone gets sold on a promise, goes into debt to pay for it, and ends up worse off than when they started.

Most of these stories follow the same arc:

A coach promises a specific financial outcome. Usually tied to a timeline. “Six-figure years.” “Five-figure months.” “Replace your income in 90 days.”

The price feels high. Uncomfortable. Maybe out of reach.

That's when the conversation shifts.

Instead of “is this the right fit for where you are right now,” it becomes “how committed are you really?”

You hear things like:

  • “If you were serious about your business, you'd find a way.”
  • “Successful people invest before they're ready.”
  • “What would it take for you to say yes today?”

And if you hesitate, the pressure increases:

Could you split it across multiple credit cards? Dip into savings? Borrow from family?

The message underneath their questions becomes even more pressure – presented as guilt:

“Your hesitation is fear. It's lack of commitment. It's the thing holding you back from the results you want.”

So you override your gut. You find the money. You make it work.

And then the promise doesn't materialize.

The Psychology That Makes It Work

Here's what makes this manipulation effective, and why even intelligent people fall for it:

They reframe financial pressure as a commitment test.

When someone asks you to spread payments across multiple cards or access funds you've set aside for other purposes, they're not helping you invest in yourself. They're pressuring you to override your financial boundaries.

If you find yourself thinking “maybe I'm just not committed enough,” pause.

That's their reframe working.

They guarantee outcomes they can't control.

No coach can guarantee you'll make money in a specific timeframe.

There are too many variables outside their influence. Your market, your capacity, your starting point, external circumstances, timing.

When someone promises financial results, they're selling hope.

Not coaching.

They blame you when the promise doesn't happen.

If you don't hit the numbers they projected, suddenly it's because you didn't do the work. You weren't coachable. You didn't follow the system.

The goalposts move.

The problem becomes your lack of execution, not their unrealistic promise they used to manipulate you.

They use forced urgency to bypass your discernment.

Limited spots. Deadline to decide. Price going up soon. Bonuses expiring.

These tactics exist to shut down the part of you that's asking reasonable questions about timing, fit, and affordability.

What Your Gut Already Knows

The reason this manipulation works is because it targets something real: your desire to grow your business and serve more people.

That desire isn't wrong.

But wanting something doesn't make unrealistic promises realistic either.

And being sold on your own desires is still being sold.

If you're considering working with a coach and something feels off, here are the questions worth sitting with:

Can I afford this without financial strain?

Not “can I technically make the payment,” but “will this put me under pressure that makes it hard to think clearly or take my time with implementation?”

If the answer is no, that matters.

Financial stress doesn't make you more committed. It makes everything harder.

Am I being asked to override my gut feeling?

Is the conversation focused on addressing your actual concerns, or on reframing your hesitation as a character flaw?

Your gut might be telling you something important.

Don't let someone talk you out of listening to it.

What happens if I don't get the promised results?

Ask directly. What's the accountability if the timeline or outcome doesn't materialize?

How does the coach handle that?

Their answer tells you a lot about who carries the risk in this arrangement.

Am I being sold on what I want to hear?

Income promises, fast timelines, guaranteed outcomes. These things sell because we want them to be true.

But wanting something doesn't make it realistic.

And being sold on your own desires is still being sold.

That’s the hook they’re counting on.

Is this person asking me to do something they wouldn't do themselves?

Would they spread a payment across multiple credit cards?

Would they dip into retirement funds?

Would they go into debt based on a promise?

If not, why are they asking you to?

The Alternative: Working From Clarity, Not Pressure

Real business growth rarely happens on the timelines coaches promise.

It happens when you're making decisions from clarity, not pressure.

The coaches worth working with understand this. They help you see what's possible without guaranteeing specific outcomes.

They respect your financial boundaries instead of pressuring you to override them. They take responsibility for their role in your results instead of blaming you when promises don't materialize.

They know that sustainable business growth comes from building capacity, not just following systems.

And capacity takes time to develop.

I'm not saying never take a financial risk. I'm not saying never invest in support before you feel completely ready.

I'm saying: don't override your financial boundaries because someone told you that's what commitment looks like.

Real commitment isn't ignoring warning signs.

Commitment is making decisions from clarity, not pressure.

And if a coach is unwilling to work with you unless you stretch beyond what's sustainable, that tells you something about how they value your wellbeing versus their bottom line.

Progress Over Perfection – Do it Scared

Feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, and stuck in indecision?

Been there, done that, and I'm here to spill the beans on how I conquered those demons back in 2019.

Looking back, I'm grateful I didn't give up.

Buckle up because we're about to unleash the power of imperfect action in this wild ride.

Shift From “Selling” to “Serving”:

At the heart of success lies a shift in mindset.

Instead of focusing solely on “selling” your ideas, products, or services, concentrate on “serving” others.

Drop the sales pitch and flip the script.

When your goal is to provide value and help solve your audience's problems, success naturally follows.

By aligning your objectives with a deeper purpose, you create authentic connections that lead to sales and meaningful relationships without you breaking a sweat.

Embrace Imperfect Action:

Perfection? Nah, not our style.

Embrace the 80% rule – 80% effort moves mountains.

Say adios to being stuck at 99.99% forever. Imperfect action drives progress, and progress is the name of the game.

Perfectionism can be a pesky pest. I used to get stuck at 80%, thinking the rest had to be perfect.

However, valuable insight from Dan Sullivan's The 80% Approach changed my perspective. He stated, “In 80% of life's situations, an 80% result is good enough to move things forward.”

Realizing that perfection is unattainable in an unpredictable world allowed me to embrace the power of imperfect action. Taking the first step, even with some rough edges, leads to faster progress and continuous improvement.

In most cases, 80% is enough to move things forward!

Who knew?

Imperfect action rocks!

Narrow Your Focus:

Forget trying to impress the whole world.

Zero in on your dream team—the dream clients who resonate with your magic.

Trying to cater to everyone can dilute your impact and make it difficult to connect with your dream audience.

Instead, narrow your focus to serve a specific group that align with YOU and your superpowers.

Take this seriously.

You want to work with people you LOVE.

People who charge your batteries.

Understand their needs.

Get to know them inside out.

Tailor your magic to fit like a glove.

Boom! Loyal Dream Clients!

The Bold Blastoff:

Launching stuff can be nerve-wracking, right? But here's the deal: embrace honesty and let your audience know you're still figuring things out.

Be real and raw with your audience.

Say, “Hey, I'm testing waters, but together we'll rock this boat!”

Transparency builds trust, and trust creates an unbreakable bond.

Embrace Vulnerability with Beta Launch:

Want to level up? Try a beta launch.

Let go of that perfectionist grip! It's not about perfection; it's about growth.

This approach involves surrendering to vulnerability, understanding that the first version need not be perfect.

Invite feedback from early adopters to gain valuable insights and improve your offering based on real-world experiences.

Embrace the growth opportunities that come with feedback, and don't be afraid to make necessary adjustments.

The feedback you'll get? Pure gold. Embrace the evolving journey, my friend.

Aim for Version 3.0 – The Holy Grail:

Perfection? Overrated! I've got a gem from the legendary Eben Pagan. Forget version 1.0, forget 2.0—aim for version 3.0.

That's the sweet spot of success right there. With each step, you learn, you tweak, you improve. Your path to greatness unfolds before you.

Start with a quick and dirty version.

Test, tweak, improve. Rinse and repeat.

Progress beats perfection any day!

This is the exact co-creation ‘formula’ I teach everyone in ATLAS. This way you end up with a program people actually buy.

Conclusion:

We've cracked the code, amigo.

Overwhelm and perfectionism don't stand a chance against your change-maker spirit.

Embrace the power of imperfect action. Serve, focus, launch with fearless gusto, and let your journey bloom.

The journey may be wild, but remember, it's not about the destination—it's about the untamed ride of progress.

Aim for version 3.0. Progress is your magic wand! Embrace it, rock on, and ride the path to fulfillment! 🚀

BTW, do you know if you have a dream business or not?

Janet Taylor - Parents Never Give Up Success Interview
Entrepreneurial Mindset

[CLIENT SUCCESS STORY] Janet Taylor from Parents Never Give Up

Janet Taylor's Parents Never Give Up mission is clear.  It's to support parents with at-risk children.  She assists parents so they handle and do whatever it takes to help their children, and themselves without judgment – in a safe environment.

So, Janet signed on as a private client in January 2020 to get some help to drive her mission forward.

The first thing we did is get clear on who Janet wanted to work with (aka her “Dream Client”)

She discovered how to use her superpower of getting people to see they can do anything no matter how long it takes as a driving force to continue adapting the business.  Because let's face it.  NONE of this biz'nis stuff is easy.

It takes work and STRATEGIC commitment.

No problem there with Janet.

Because then she created an entirely new website with lead generators.

She began Facebook Lives – almost EVERY DAY. And STILL going BTW.

Janet stepped into what she does best – SPEAKING her truth – directly into the hearts and minds of her clients through the camera lens on her iPhone.

Simple.  For her.

And simple enough that it worked.

Isn't that the point?

Whenever coaching and “strategy” are at the forefront, it's up to your coach to know how to adapt.  Not follow a one-size-fits-all manual.  It's up to your coach to combine the tools, methods, and strategies that FIT you and your business.  At least this is how I work with clients like Janet.

Which is why we explored different avenues together.

We tried some things that didn't work.  Or it didn't ‘feel' right to Janet.

No problem.  We move on to the next thing.

But that doesn't mean I don't push Janet to grow.

In one example, she went beyond her comfort zone to learn enough about “tech”.

Janet also took on “copywriting” with the Write Marketing Copy program.  She's not a “writer” and isn't fond of copy either.  But after taking the program she was hooked.  Because it completely changed the way she communicates with her audience.

Go figure.

And here we are…just a few weeks later  and Janet has 12 people in her bi-weekly zoom group (membership) so far with the next one in the works!!!

PLUS she has 2 private clients who just signed on for one-to-one coaching!!!

BRAVO Janet!

As she puts it “All the work is paying off and my daily videos in my closed FB group are gaining traction. “

This is only the beginning for Janet.

You will see her in more ways than one.

She is recognized by Tony Robbins himself – and even was interviewed by the team.

I believe in People-First-Profit-Second.  So does Janet.

And it proves to be the success driver of so many – including Janet.

Janet's passion is powerful.  And I am grateful to be a small part of her Parents Never Give Up movement.

starting an online business from scratch

Starting an online business from scratch

If I were starting an online business from scratch…

It begins with “email list building”.

But this post is not about a specific email list building strategy.

Instead, it's an OVERALL business growth perspective and strategy…

which LEADS to an awesome email list of dream customers.

HERE IT IS.

The best advice for starting an online business from scratch, is to build your “system” , funnel, whatever you want to call it >>> ONE step at a time.

The biggest challenge for me was wanting to have the entire ‘system' in place and “right” before doing anything.

This not only held me back for years, but MOST of what I did failed anyway.

Because “failing forward” is how you succeed starting an online business.

But nobody wants to fail.

They're terrified of failure.

So they try to ‘perfect' everything in an effort to avoid failure.
I've seen it over and over and over again.

We build a ‘system' – launch or whatever…and then the first step – the lead magnet – fails.

As an example.

So we put months into building a system, emails, automations, products, and so on … and then find out we don't have the market problems nailed.

now

I'm giving you an extreme scenario…but it happens more often than not.

Many moons ago Rich Schefren taught me to:

build the system a step at a time, and then automate / scale the parts that work.

And I teach this strategy to every client when they want to start an online business from scratch.

But there's a lot of resistance.

Let me give you an example of the biggest objection I hear when sharing this strategy

“Joey, if I don't have my email followup campaign ready..with a ‘product ladder' upsell ready…then what happens with ALL the people who opt-in for my lead magnet?”

Here's the answer.

First of all, that's a GREAT problem to have.

Think about it.

If you put a lead magnet out that goes crazy with opt-ins…you have a home run. Rare on the first few tries…but it happens.

so let's say that's you.

and now you have a billion people “sitting” on your list “waiting”

is that so bad?

let's say you don't have your “product ladder” ready

who cares?

you can easily send out broadcast emails once or twice a week now to keep your list engaged, and add even more value. All while you write your email nurture sequence for the new peeps opting in

‘cos you know your front end works.

PLUS,

you'll be SUPER different from 90% of the marketers who put people into the same “system” 😉

AND, different is the KEY to starting an online business

In the words of Sally Hogshead:

“different is better than better”

onward

THEN, you build the next piece (read: test)

which can be a low dollar offer, an invite to a coaching strategy call , whatever it is.

Just One More Thing About Building An Online Business From Scratch

The BIGGEST “secret” that I find 99.9% of business entrepreneurs skip (including me at the beginning) is the market research

‘cos it's boring.

But let me share this.

if you spend 80% of ONE week doing the proper research, understanding exactly what your customers want and need (read they have an internal DESIRE that we need to tap into) then EVERYTHING going forward is so much easier

  • lead magnets
  • email marketing
  • sales page copy
  • facebook ad copy
  • chatbot copy
  • webinars that convert
.
.
.

the list goes on

I can't guarantee anything works for me or clients…or for that matter, YOU.

But this build it as you go thing is pretty dang close

this of course is another “Joey opinionated knowledge post”

hope it serves

lessons learned from being an entrepreneur
Entrepreneurial Mindset

10 Entrepreneur Life Lessons Learned from Being an Entrepreneur

Here are The Top 10 Lessons Learned From Being an Entrepreneur

1. 80% of everything will fail.

2. Be okay with failing.

Because it’s not a matter of “IF” we fail. It’s a matter of how hard and how fast the failures come. So; we either fail forward, or fail and quit. The choice we make comes down to our core purpose for the business.

3. Have a clear purpose for the business.

If the purpose is ONLY money driven, it is not enough to get through the adversities. Refer to #1

4. Have the 4 “C”s in place at all time – Confidence, Clarity, Commitment and Coaching.

The last one gets you further, faster and eliminates overwhelm and distractions. Everyone wants faster results – but In order to have coaching, we need the other 3 “C”s in place.

5. ALL the money is made on the back end.

If we expect million dollar launches and webinars because we focus on outliers, we are sure to be disappointed. Which leads to..

6. Have a back end in place before pouring money into the front end.

This doesn’t mean have an entire system in place. That will only trigger analysis paralysis. It means that we acknowledge rule #1 & #5 and…

7. TEST.

Everything is a test. It doesn’t matter what Joey, Tom, Tony, Mary or Bob does. If we expect the same result from doing what everyone else is doing, we are sure to be disappointed.

That doesn’t mean don’t listen to anyone. It doesn’t mean never model other people to speed up the process. It means let your “expectations” down a bit. Hope for the best, and expect the rest.

8. TIME is the only constant.

Nothing else. We either waste it or learn from it.

We can’t SLOW DOWN, SPEED UP or REWIND time.

If we are unwilling to invest the time to learn, build, make mistakes and grow slowly, the only rewards we get are disappointment, stress, frustration and exhaustion.

Which means we’ll want to give up sooner.

It takes what it takes.

9. As Russell Brunson says: we ARE only “1 funnel away”

..or sale, project, customer. Reread rules 1-8 so this rule sets in.

10- Hard truth# – there are only 2 types of people; profit-driven or purpose-driven.

There’s no judgement here.

But here’s what I’ve learned.

Profit-driven (money being the only driver) people quit sooner, faster and often feel confused, jealous, angry and unlucky because they are after immediate results.  This is a big

Simply, profit-driven people ignore rules 1-9.

Here’s the counter-intuitive logic;

Even though Profit-driven people want and need money as fast as possible, Purpose-driven people NEED EVEN MORE MONEY.

Because purpose-driven people have a BIGGER reason to make money.

They have families, communities and causes they care about to support. They thrive on helping people first – even when it doesn’t make money at the start.

Because their true help turns into money.

And they know the more money they make, the bigger, positive impact they can make in the world.

In other words, purpose-driven people have a HUGE reason beyond their bank account to follow these first 9 rules.

There ya go.

10 lessons an entrepreneur must learn.

Great Speed Forward in everything you do.
